Critical minerals play a vital role in economic development and national security. These minerals are essential for high-tech electronics, telecommunications, transportation, and defense. However, their limited availability poses significant supply chain risks. To strengthen India’s resource security, it is crucial to identify, develop, and secure the value chain for these critical minerals. In 2023, the Indian Ministry of Mines identified 30 critical minerals, including 17 rare earth elements (REEs) and six platinum-group elements (PGEs). Some of the key critical minerals for India include Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, Vanadium, Niobium, Graphite, Silicon, and Titanium, among others.
India remains highly dependent on imports for several of these minerals, such as Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, Vanadium, and Germanium. To reduce this dependency, initiatives like KABIL (Khanij Bidesh India Ltd.) are working to secure overseas mineral assets. Additionally, the Indian government has launched e-auctions for critical and strategic mineral blocks, including lithium, REEs, PGEs, nickel, and potash, to boost domestic exploration and production.
As India strives for self-reliance in critical minerals, strengthening our mineral supply chains will be key to driving industrial growth, technological advancement, and national security. Recycling can play a crucial role in reducing India's dependency on imported critical minerals. Companies with innovative technologies for recovering critical minerals from secondary resources should be actively supported to strengthen domestic supply chains.
The Government of India can accelerate this shift by offering grants, fast-track approvals, and policy incentives to encourage investment in sustainable mineral recovery. Supporting such initiatives will not only enhance resource security but also promote a circular economy and environmental sustainability.
